Learning communities are defined as the result of an education center and its environment's cultural and social transformation through an integrated, participatory, and continuing type of education, based on dialogic learning. Their characteristics and the pedagogical elements implemented, as well as the participation, the central role of learning, the positive expectations, and the cooperation these communities display are examined. The concept of dialogic learning and its elements are extensively developed. We then move on to listing the phases through which an educational center becomes transformed into a learning community. Finally, in the participants' own words, some aspects are analysed regarding the steps through which four schools in the Basque Country are leading their own process of transformation into learning communities
