This essay looks at the early growth of sport in Barcelona from the 1890s through 1920 including gymnastics, cycling, water sports, excursionism and more with the exception of football. The first part discusses the development of the groups that patronized these sports in reasonable detail to give a clear idea of the non-football societies that developed and what some of their connections to the larger social world of the city were. The second section turns to the growth of stores and companies that served the new activity, the role sport played for the middle and upper classes and the close connections between these groups, sport and the region's famous artistic community during the period
