This essay considers football's development in Barcelona in its first generation from 1898 through the 1910s and how it was shaped by the regional, national, religious and foreign identities of its participants and the activity itself. It starts with the foundations of F.C. Barcelona and F.C. Catalá, the different stories about how this happened, and the role played by Protestant Hans Gamper in Catholic Barcelona. The second section focuses on the development of other clubs like Real Club Deportivo Español, early tournaments including the Copa Macaya and struggles at the end of the decade. The final portion addresses how some of these issues played out in the 1910s, when the sport began to expand beyond its almost exclusively middle-class origins to draw in a mass audience
