This article, based partly on data contained in its author's unpublished doctoral thesis, and conceived as a tribute to Don Cruickshank's masterly biography Don Pedro Calderón, offers a brief account of the life of that dramatist's coeval, collaborator and friend, Juan Pérez de Montalbán. After an initial section on his family, in particular his father, the important bookseller and publisher Alonso Pérez, it gives details of Montalbán's many years as a student at the University of Alcalá (from which it emerges that he was born not in 1602 but in 1601), and of his various religious activities. The next section deals with his development as a poet, prose writer and playwright, with reference to all his important works, especially of course his autos and comedias. A final section covers the last seven years of his life, the mental illness which led to his premature death in 1638, and the tributes which followed to a dramatist—as popular as any in his day—who had been seen as Lope de Vega's heir apparent, and welcomes a recent initiative aimed in particular at making his plays far more accessible than heretofore
