This article provides an overview of issues pertaining to the creation of a global jazz historiography, with particular focus on the South African case study. It outlines challenges inherent in thinking globally about jazz; reflects on these issues in relation to the South Africa case; provides an overview of the state of South African jazz research and scholarship; and concludes with a discussion of a democratic and globally imagined agenda for South African historiography
