The Şahkulu Rebellion, which posed a significant threat to Ottoman stability, took place in the Teke region in 1511. Various religious, political, and socio-economic factors prompted Şahkulu to launch the insurgent movement. The rebellion ended with Şahkulu’s defeat in Sivas. Kızılkaya is of great importance in the rebellion, both as a military base and a defence unit. Archaeological remains in Avdancık, Gündoğdu, and Karapınar have confirmed the existence of small defence units around Kızılkaya, which were used effectively during the rebellion. The most important reason behind this location is the advantage offered by the mountainous structure of Kızılkaya. In this study, a rebellion that started on the Yalınlıköy-Kızılkaya axis has been concretised with archaeological data from Avdancık, Karapınar, and Gündoğdu (Burdur). This study represents a pioneering effort as the first investigation of the Şahkulu Rebellion through battlefield archaeology in the early Ottoman Empire.
