One effect of the philosopher Alain Badiou's question, “What does the name Sarkozy stand for?”, has been to de-normalize the persona of Sarkozy, presenting him as somehow exceptional, marked by some peculiar abnormality. This paper reformulates Badiou's question, slightly altering its terms of reference and giving it a different slant. What does the name Sarkozy stand for in the eyes of the parties of the left? And what does the left itself stand for, in its various configurations, from “social liberalism” to “anti-capitalism”? In this, the long-standing split between reformists and revolutionaries remains a significant issue, especially as it has been deepened by one of the most serious crises that capitalism has had to face
