This article recounts the development of early film technology and business practice in Germany in the first years of commercial cinema. It focuses on an extraordinary partnership between two men, one an early cinema pioneer, the other a well known chocolate manufacturer. This unlikely relationship resulted in filming actualities for the kinetoscope business in Germany, and the development of a cinema viewing apparatus modelled on the existing technologies deployed to dispense chocolate. Through a unique collection of archival sources the article explores the design of this apparatus, as well as the provision of films and the business practices which informed their exploitation in this early period
