The introduction to the special issue provides an overview of the rich and longstanding history of classical receptions in the countries discussed in this collection: Bulgaria, Poland, Romania, and Russia. The introduction briefly outlines the chronological milestones of these countries’ deep engagement with Greco–Roman antiquity and offers a rationale for the desirability of further research into that engagement in Anglophone scholarship. Furthermore, the introductory essay explains the focus of the special issue and its concentration on poetic responses to classical heritage
