This article focuses on the notion of identity. It begins by recalling how much the museum in general, but especially museums of ethnology and history, is linked to the concept of identity. The concept of identity was born of the modern philosophical tradition, a period during which the museum developed rapidly. However, the contemporary period is questioning the ontological foundations of that concept. The literature of the human and social sciences is increasingly contesting identity as an “umbrella” term. By re-reading several authors’ contributions, this article considers alternatives to the identity problematic in the museum sphere. For today museums find themselves in a contradiction, if not a kind of aporia. More than simply replacing one word for another, this article explores the very paradigmatic dimensions of the term identity. Beyond taking refuge in a discursive polyphony, the museum has a duty to offer responses and begin to incorporate the notion of interpretation
