Various features of prefascist coffee and drinking cultures can shed light on specific dimensions of the antifascist experience in coffeehouses and drinking establishments. This article focuses on the sensory aspects of coffee and alcohol consumption and their possible connections with the embodied experience of anti-totalitarian resistance to political control. This approach favors collaborations between historians; food studies scholars, attuned to interpreting the cultural and social meanings of foodways; and sensory studies scholars, whose work reminds us instead that food and drink are first and foremost experienced through our bodies. The centrality of materiality also invites us to reflect on the impact of built environments, interior design, and objects related to the consumption of coffee and alcoholic drinks as providing another entryway to understand the connection with anti-totalitarianism and antifascism in a more holistic way
