social innovation' might develop and who is responsible for its implementation. Drawing on experiences from the Older People for Older People (O4O) action research project, this article explores how co-production of services with and for older people and their families might happen and what the role of an action research in facilitating social changes is. As the project aimed to support the development of rural social enterprises, the article focuses on the role that the action researchers played in the development of those social organisations, and critically reflects on the key successes and challenges experienced. The article first provides a background to the study and briefly locates it within existing literature and current policy, before the rationale and methodological approach are discussed. The article then summarises the key challenges and opportunities influencing the co-production of social enterprises in rural areas of Scotland with older people and the role of researchers in this process, before drawing conclusions and identifying future research possibilities
