This is a three-part part article on the role Abiola Irele played in the Francophone world. First, Abiola Irele is presented as a Renaissance intellectual, someone who, as a “passeur” as defined by Tzvetan Todorov, was involved in many areas of knowledge, someone who crossed the boundaries of language and culture and helped other scholars to do so. Secondly, the article engages in metacriticism with an analysis of some of Abiola Irele’s essays on Négritude, an example of how he tried to erase, or at least blur the dividing lines of African literature and thought. Finally, the article deals with my personal experience of how Irele put his ideas into practice and how he was influential in francophone environments
