The debate involving the use of pesticides shows divergent narratives: one aligned with agribusiness and the other with environmental sustainability. Each one presents a motivation with arguments for and against the use of pesticides and conforms the discussion of the issue. Environmental demands had been building for some time a narrative of decreasing the use of pesticides due to the dangerousness of the substances they contain. However, even with the advancement of agendas aimed at the achievement of civil rights and the consolidation of knowledge about environmental impacts, the narrative of support for the use of pesticides has been gaining notoriety. Part of this notability is linked to the historical denial of the construction of the environmental agenda, which is represented in the current regulatory frameworks. Narrative analysis served as a theoretical basis for choosing different approaches to the use of pesticides in Brazil and contributed to describing their origins, conceptions of development, and prospects for advancement that corroborate each narrative. Narrative tensions spill over into public policies, which are made up of non-linear advances, with the progression of environmental sustainability up to 2016. After 2016, a tendency towards a paralysis in advances of a more sustainable agenda in relation to the use of pesticides and denotes a dismantling of the achievements and advances of this theme, in favor of the liberalization of pesticides
