Gay activist-filmmaker Pat Rocco’s feature filmography begins and ends with bisexual films. Rocco’s utopian vision of male homosexuality prevented longer exclusively gay narratives from organically emerging out of his short vignettes of same-gender affection largely lacking narrative conflict. Bisexuality became the medium for creating gay feature-length narrative films because it provided a subculturally specific conflict located within gay cultural contexts. This article unearths the thick contextual history out of which Rocco’s bisexual features, Someone (1968) and Drifter (1975), emerged. Ultimately, grassroots gay narrative cinema was, from the get-go, bisexual cinema
