The generalized loss of efficiency found in presenile and early senile dementia might be expected to produce a fairly regular pattern of WAIS subtest scores. Also, for these patients diagnosis by psychological methods is of more practical relevance than for other types of brain damage. The records of 148 patients from two previous studies were inspected. They had been tested when the diagnosis was doubtful and classified after a follow-up of at least a year as dementia (50) or depression (98). Table 1 shows their mean age-scaled scores on the seven subtests which rhey had all completed: Vocabulary (V), Similarities (S), Arithmetic (A), Digit Span (D), Picture Completion (P), Block Designs (B) and Digit Symbol (DS)
