Two previous reports (Runquist & Joinson, 1968; Runquisr, 1968) have presented normative ratings of similarity for pairs of trigrams. These ratings have shown a close correspondence to the number and position of identical letters and have been independent of both association value and whether CVCs or C C G were rated. In these studies, Ss only rated trigrams from a given level of association value or of a given kind. It is possible, therefore, that the similarity values obtained are not comparable across different kinds of material but that equality resulted from the effect of simply rating homogeneous classes of items. In the present study, Ss rated pairs of CVC trigrams of all levels of meaningfulness for similarity on a scale from 0 to 100. Each S rated 120 pairs of items arranged in booklets 15 to a page. Items were selected from Archer's (1960) tables so that there were 30 examples from each of five levels of association value (0-25, 26-50, 51-75, 76100). Within each level, five different sources of letter identity were used plus the condition of no identical letters. Two sets were used with 21 Ss rating each set. The mean rating for items exemplifying a particular source of similarity is shown in Table 1. The results show no systematic differences between items at different association values. It may be concluded, therefore, that previous ratings do accurately reflect perceived similarity across different materials
