Improvement in the education of public health professionals must occur so graduates can provide leadership to strengthen the capacity of the public health system. Graduate public health curricula should be developed with consideration of the health needs of the people and the functions of public health. This article describes for one public health discipline—nursing—the development of graduate education models designed to prepare nurses to fill leadership positions in official public health agencies. It describes the role of the public health nursing specialist, recommended competencies and curriculum content for graduate education for public health nurse specialists, model programs to prepare graduates, and outcome competencies for the described model programs
