This paper, given originally at a Coombe Lodge Conference for college staff bearing responsibility for course evaluation and review, traces the development of CNAA policy and practice in these matters since 1973, culminating in the Partnership in Validation developments beyond 1979. The author seeks to demonstrate CNAA's central concern in course evaluation and review as with the maintenance of vitality and standards. Within the validation policy of partnership, CNAA's interest is to evaluate the soundness of internal processes so that a shared responsibility for the maintenance of standards may be soundly based, and, as importantly, seen to be soundly based
