Fred Holland Day's photographs of c1assicized nude or seminude male models, which comprise the majority of his production after 1905, are among his best-known images. They are also among his most important, as Allen Ellenz-weig suggests, Day's preoccupatiOn with a classical ideal of male beauty was fundamental to his process of validating photography as an art, Just as it was the veil through which he mediated his crotic desire.1 Day's rcpresentation of c1assiCized male models was shared by other pictonal photographers who likewise premised their art on male beauty and eroticism, and whose works were published regularly by photography journals at the turn of the century. In fact, the widespread appearance of the classicized male nude in photography at that time suggests that it was neither an anachronism nor, in Day's work, an unmediatcd sign of homosexual yearning, as some of Day's biographers suggest.2 Instead, it presents a broader field within which Day's Images circulated, and suggests that homoeroticism is not exclusively contained in the domain of sexual activity
