In the course of 1853–1854, the Reverend Edward Bradley (1827–1889), writing under his pen name Cuthbert Bede, stitched together a light-hearted survey of the state of photography in England at the time.1 Photographic Pleasures (figure 1), which was published in London in late January 1855, was meant to bring a smile to its readers and, if possible, a little fame and fortune to its author. There is nothing in it that is very profound or strikingly perceptive but, even so, it is precious today as a snapshot of the current scene, made by a sharpeyed observer. No avid photographer himself, Bede yet makes it plain that he had a nodding acquaintance with the names of all the pioneers in the new art, and with the processes and problems that were baffling its practitioners. By tracing the ways in which this young man, with no more than a casual interest in the subject, managed to gather the materials for his book, it is possible to find out how the idea, if not the practice, of photography had become a familiar presence in the England of the day
