Consideration is given to aspects of the cartographic design of the forthcoming Design for Development: Province of Ontario, Atlas of Performance Indicators. Most of Ontario's population, and its economic activity, is concentrated in the south while the extensive northern part of the province contains a sparse population. Frequently, maps of Ontario place northern Ontario in an inset map, at a greatly reduced scale, across Lake Ontario. Described is the construction of a map projection which foreshortens northern Ontario while preserving its natural relationship to southern Ontario. The approach to other design problems is discussed. Appended is the explanatory foreword in which Adas readers will be introduced to the new projection.
