Where Am I? Basic Concepts in Human Orientation
Seeking New Horizons
Education Through Mapping / a New Role for the School Atlas
A Cartographic Communication Approach to the Design of an Atlas Symbol
Tactual Maps And Graphics/Some Implications For Our Study Of Visual Cartographic Communication
This paper considers some of the implications for thinking about mapping in the visual area when considering the limitations and problems that arise for tactual map users and for the designers of graphics for the blind. A suggestion is made as to how the Canadian Cartographic Association might facilitate a Canadian effort in fostering the continuation of the momentum initiated at the 1st International Symposium on Maps and Graphics for the Visual…
Might there be a Suzuki Method in Cartographic Education
Shinichi Suzuki and Carl Orff have developed methods for teaching music to young children that utilize the same perceptual skills they use in mastering their mother tongue. This paper examines a possible association between music and map design and suggests that in both there is a need in communication for a disciplined use of the basic components, be they notes or graphic elements. By improving the perceptual skills of children in vision more me…
Eye Movement Recording / Some Approaches to the Study of Map Perception
An electro-oculographic eye-movement recording system, utilizing equipment and expertise already in the University, is described. Its use is intended for cartographic research aimed at using the eye-brain perceptual system as an integrating device to assess subjects' visual and intellectual responses to a map, the reading environment, and the assigned task. Depending on the research questions asked, system output can be generated in a variety of …
Concept Before Content? A Question in Atlas Design With Special Reference to the National Atlas of Canada
A History of the Cartography of Russia up to 1600 and a History of Russian Cartography up to 1800
Photo Map of the Gould Lake Conservation Area
A photo map project in the Cartographic Laboratory, Queen's University is described. Its basic simplicity masks the thoroughness with which it covers many aspects of cartographic design, compilation, drafting, and reproduction. As such, it provides an excellent but compact vehicle for involving students of cartography in the breadth of the discipline
The User’s Influence in Specific Design Problems
Consideration is given to aspects of the cartographic design of the forthcoming Design for Development: Province of Ontario, Atlas of Performance Indicators. Most of Ontario's population, and its economic activity, is concentrated in the south while the extensive northern part of the province contains a sparse population. Frequently, maps of Ontario place northern Ontario in an inset map, at a greatly reduced scale, across Lake Ontario. Described…
