It is always heartening when one has interest in a particular area of education to find recent publications treating that area. Interdisciplinary Curriculum: Design and Implementation (Jacobs 1989), edited by Heidi Hayes Jacobs, and What's Worth Teaching? Selecting, Organizing, and Integrating Knowledge (Brady 1989), by Marion Brady, are two recent books that we looked forward to with high expectations for the light they might shed on curriculum integration and on the idea of integration itself. Our expectations had been heightened by our previous investigations of integration. We had found, as had Paul Dressel and his colleagues (Henry 1958), that there is something self-propelling about the notion of integration. We found that once one begins to take seriously the ideas of wholeness and coherence that are suggested by one can be drawn on through a series of increasingly encompassing and increasingly coherent contexts. Integration ceases to be simply a device for the organization of content. An expansion of the scope of integration shows that it can encompass more than the technical context of curriculum construction; it can include intellectual integration, that is, the integration of all aspects of rationality.
