A reconsideration of Horton's ideas on « conversion in Africa » as being diametrically opposed to an absolute separation, allows the author to distinguish between religious traditions in terms of the different modes of commitment to belief they imply. It thus becomes necessary to stress the various ways in which conversion is envisaged locally : as a negotiation under more or less constraining conditions, as a phenomenon of collective commitment, or again, as a radical break having complex and relatively largely unexpected manifestations
