In Brazil, a traditional African cuisine survives in conjunction with African symbolism, particularly (but not exclusively) in the Afro-Brazilian religious cults. This symbolism is maintained in the intimacy of places of worship ("terreiros") in offerings, ritual, and alimentary taboos. By this symbolism human cuisine is transformed into food-message, simultaneously word of the gods and word to the gods ; it constantly nourishes the life of gods and men, and is necessary for the balance of cosmic forces
