Marc Buffat : "Ecco il vero pulcinella". A study of Diderot's comments on portraits of himself help us to understand certain aspects of his aesthetics and to emphasize his strange relation to himself. Concerning æsthetics, painting is characterised by the fact that the person represented is seen as both a living being and a painted being ; concerning his relation to himself, what is striking is that Diderot perceives himself as another, as can be seen in three factors : he presents himself as seen from outside, he removes personal pronouns and possessives and he considers himself from the standpoint of posterity
