Cognitive innovation in hybrid human/animal communities where meanings, interests and emotions are shared. Animals are not condemned to purely routine patterns of use. Animals with the higher degrees of complexity have the capacity to innovate cognitively, i.e. to acquire one or several cognitive procedures that are quite without precedent in the original collectivities of their species where they usually evolve. This article discusses recent work, based on observations in the field or in experimental laboratory situations, which describes changes in the cognitive behaviour of animals and which attempts to account for them. The studies on the linguistic capacities of apes, and on tool use in animals, are particularly interesting in this respect. This work raises questions concerning the role of certain particular communities, where meanings, interests and emotions are shared, in shaping the cognitive ecology of animals ; and opens the possibility of elaborating a natural history of culture from a cognitive point of view
