Bilingual speech and cognitive treatments The present paper deals with different forms of «bilingual speech» — and in particular with code-switching — that characterise verbal interaction between bilingual persons when communicating in a bilingual mode. We are specially interested in the cognitive elements that belong to different linguistic systems. The background assumptions are that grammatical and lexical systems have complementary functions in the construction of meaning and that neither memorised lexical items nor «things of the world» to which we refer with them, are stable across the interlocutors. Some formal constraints of bilingual speech are then explained as traces of the effort to create compatibility between the «cognitive scaffolding» in a matrice language and the contextual properties of lexical items chosen in an embedded language because they correspond better to the speakers' intention
