Plurilingual speech as legitimate and efficient communication strategy
This paper is grounded in the evolution of our reflection on the relationship between plurilingualism, plurilingual speech and language learning. That is, it refers to research on the construction of plurilingual repertoires, over a period of more than thirty years, as documented in Lüdi and Py (1986 [2009]. “To Be or Not to Be ... a Plurilingual Speaker.” International Journal of Multilingualism 6 (2): 154–167; [2013]. Etre bilingue. 4e édition …
Diversity and multilingual challenges in academic settings
Higher Education is caught between internationalization on the one hand and the quest for local support by fostering local practices on the other. The clash between uniformity-standardization and localization-specialization manifests itself in every university trying to adopt internationalization strategies. How can universities manage this tension? Is diversity considered beneficial or a barrier to the internationalization process? The aim of th…
English in the Workplace in Switzerland between Ideologies and Practices
A widely shared opinion states that English in its international form is particularly suited for the economy. Consequently, a shift from national languages to English as corporate language has been observed in many countries. However, this choice is not based on the results of scientific research, but rather on ideologies. In many cases, the real practices can differ quite significantly from what people think and/or tell they do. This calls for e…

Receptive multilingualism as a strategy for sharing mutual linguistic resources in the workplace in a Swiss context
The growing mobility of populations in important parts of the world has led, and is continuing to lead, to a lasting change from monolingual to multilingual teams of people working together, and the need for techniques for communication between people of different languages. A frequent stereotype envisages the most convenient solution as the choice of a single language, often English, including for the purposes of internal communication. Generall…

Patterns of language use in polyglossic urban areas and multilingual regions and institutions
Growing mobility of important parts of the world's population has led to a massive increase in multilingualism in post-modern societies and a lasting change from homoglossic to polyglossic communities with important "deterritorialised" linguistic minorities, mostly plurilingual to a variable degree.Ideologies and practices of communication in old and new multilingual contexts vary largely. The "solutions" for overcoming potential problems go from …
Are ‘diversity management’ and monolingualism compatible? About learning and using foreign languages in a context of globalisation
Ideologies and communication practices vary hugely in multilingual workplaces. On the one hand, many companies include Diversity Management in their corporate culture because there are theoretical and empirical reasons to believe that a company which employs a diverse workforce enhances its opportunities in a global marketplace whilst improving employee satisfaction and thus productivity. On the other hand, globally oriented companies, often the …

To be or not to be … a plurilingual speaker
The bi/plurilingual person is a unique speaker–hearer who should be studied as such and not always in comparison with the monolingual. As such, unilingual linguistic models and perspectives based on the idea that bilingualism is a duplication of competences in two languages (or more) are unsuitable to describe plural practices in multilingual societies. This is a criticism we formulated over the years (Lüdi & Py, 1986 Lüdi, G. and Py, B. 1986. Et…

Argumentiert wi…
Le code-switching comme variété mixte
Parler bilingue et traitements cognitifs
Bilingual speech and cognitive treatments The present paper deals with different forms of «bilingual speech» — and in particular with code-switching — that characterise verbal interaction between bilingual persons when communicating in a bilingual mode. We are specially interested in the cognitive elements that belong to different linguistic systems. The background assumptions are that grammatical and lexical systems have complementary functions …

Lüdi, Georges et Bernard Py - "Switzerland: a laboratory for studying the dynamics of language contact". Switzerland is often said to be a quadrilingual country. Four languages are officially recognized on their territory, and delimit four monolingual aereas. But this theoretical situation is rather far from reality, due to three phenomena: foreign migration ; dialectal situation of languages within their own area (especially the german area) ; i…
