Lüdi, Georges et Bernard Py - "Switzerland: a laboratory for studying the dynamics of language contact". Switzerland is often said to be a quadrilingual country. Four languages are officially recognized on their territory, and delimit four monolingual aereas. But this theoretical situation is rather far from reality, due to three phenomena: foreign migration ; dialectal situation of languages within their own area (especially the german area) ; internal migration and domination between languages. An inventory of these problems shows that Switzerland is an interesting case for studying language contact, and is an introduction for the two more specific enquiries published infra
