Of anthropology's many shibboleths, perhaps the most compelling is holism and its operational corollary of long-term field study in the language of informants. When combined with an evolutionary or developmental perspective, an holistic set of data can encompass the biological, cultural and historical processes that provide constraints and incentives on human behavior. This intellectual stance permits anthropologists to achieve comprehensive and systematic analyses of the phenomenon studied, where our sister disciplines eschew holism in favor of brief, cursory treatments of fragments of the whole
