Anthropological research on global production chains urges us to pay attention to the dynamics and cultural responses of the diverse units that integrate such systems. In this article, I present the results of my research on autopart plants that are located in different industrial parks in the north and center of Mexico. We chose those plants that have direct relations with the assembly plants or first tier plants. We used the traditional anthropological research techniques. Direct observation and interviews with workers and managers helped us to have different points of view about the opportunities and restrictions of modern industrial development in a technologically dependent country. In this article I will concentrate our attention on the instrument used to audit global quality, called QS9000. This will be thoroughly explained in the later sections of this essay. Among the features of globalization, it has had the greatest impact on the automotive industry in Mexico. Our question is can this instrument transcend the sociocultural and institutional configuration of the local contexts
