D. Preziosi and C. Farago (eds.), Grasping the World: The idea of the museum. Aldershot, Ashgate, 2004. ISBN 0–7546–0835–2. 804 pp., 68 b. & w. illus. £35. As teaching compilations go, this one – a real doorstop of a book at over 800 pages – is perhaps the best ever assembled for the theoretics of museum studies. It contains forty-one papers by various authors (all but two previously published and many excerpted from longer pieces) as well as introductions by the editors to the book as a whole and to its six sections. The sections are ‘Creating Historical Effects’, ‘Instituting Evidence’, ‘Building Shared Imaginaries/Effacing Otherness’, ‘Observing Subjects/Disciplining Practice’, ‘Secularizing Rituals’ and ‘Inclusions and Exclusions: Representing Adequately’.
