At the time of Cardinal Mazarin's death, there were 641 paintings in his collection. They were, for the most part, of Italian origin with a definite preference for Venetian paintings of the sixteenth century and Bolognese masters of the seventeenth century. This article proposes to explain how and where the Cardinal acquired his paintings. Through his agents he looked for works in the Milanese region and tried to purchase paintings directly from contemporary painters such as Gueciano and Guido Reni. In particular, however, he improved his collection by adding works which had already been absorbed into collections and which had belonged to Abbot Gavotti or to the Barberim family Among these, are prestigious paintings such as the Mystic marriage of Saint Catherine of Correggio or the Virgin sewing with her companions by Reni.
