Willium Lezler collected Chinese porcelain from about about 1894 until 1924. His tastes nerer dereloped beuyond those wares fashionable in the first part of this time, the blue-and-white and the enamelled porcelain of the Kangxi period. Within this relatively narrow range, Lever brought fine examples, usually through dealers, but rarely was prepared to pay for the very best. Exceptionally, he did attempt to buy the exceedingly expensive collection of Richard Bennett from the dealer Edgar Gorer; sfter a law-suit he was left with a portion of the collection only. Some of the pieces in this collection were in famille noire enamels, then be-coming millionaires' taste. After the decision to found a public museum, Lerer began to buy ourside his own taste, purchasing a few examples of other oriental works of decorative art for the Lady Lever Art Gallery.
