Influences on condom use among young men in Managua, Nicaragua

The study was designed to determine patterns and prevalence of condom use and associated factors among young men in a district of Managua, Nicaragua. Both quantitative and qualitative data was collected. Findings suggested increasing levels of condom use in comparison to previous research among young men in urban Managua. However, high risk sexual behaviour remained frequent. Condom use decreased with increasing emotional proximity to the sexual partner, but was positively correlated with age, a high number of sexual partners, andunexpectedlythe existence of a parallel stable relationship. Although young men in Managua appear reasonably well informed about AIDS and the preventive effect of condom use, continued dissemination of key messages seems necessary. Doubts about product quality and psychological problems relating to the use condoms need to be tackled simultaneously
