This paper explores the early lives of eminent individuals in literature—Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll), Beatrix Potter, Agatha Christie, and Dylan Thomas as regards the role of parents, siblings, home environments, and education. The author concludes that by documenting examples of “gifted behavior” in talented individuals, we are better able to understand how talent emerges and flourishes. Such studies may help educators to observe and document behaviors of able children—particularly those with a writing talent, and to provide the kind of latitude in school settings required by these emerging talents. The author also encourages the use of biography with students to illuminate gifted traits in individuals
