Primarily a student of the Middle Ages, my old friendship with Professor Bullock has driven me to search among old notes and papers in the hope of finding materials for a study connected with the period he had so thoroughly made his own. To write on some topic connected with the CINQUECENTO is only fitting in a publication dedicated to his memory. Hence my choice of what is, perhaps too ambitiously, styled ‘a bibliographical introduction,’ and which is drawn from materials gathered by me some years ago for a bibliography of the Questione della lingua in sixteenth-century Italy. Before embarking upon the actual subject of this paper, I feel that an explanation is necessary. As any expert will be able to perceive almost immediately, this survey cannot claim that completeness which is so desirable in works of this kind. Built up almost entirely from my cards and stray notes on the Questione della lingua, it is painfully full of omissions. The impossibility of reasonable communications with Italy, and my military duties, which make visits to the British Museum and academic libraries barely a yearly event, are chiefly responsible for the somewhat fragmentary nature of this work. All the same, I still hope, perhaps too optimistically, that it may prove not entirely useless to those interested in CINQUECENTO philology and literary criticism, and perhaps even encourage research on an interesting subject which has been comparatively neglected so far
