Miracles Language and Power in a 19th Century Islamic Hagiographic Text

WHILE searching through the subject catalogue in the Dar al-Kutub library in Cairo', I came across a brief (48 pp.) lithographed text entitled The Marvellous Qualities of the Four (Spiritua[) Poles (Mandqib2 al-Aqtdb al-Arba'a). The text purports to have been dictated by the Egyptian $5f-i Ahmad al-Sarnfibi (15241585) to his disciple Muhammad al-Bulqln1. The link, however, must be spiritual rather than chronological since both the contents of the text and the dates of al-Bulqlni's life place its composition in the late 1800's. The lithographed edition appeared in the year 1863 and apparently found some appreciation since it was reprinted at least once and numerous manuscript copies are mentioned, including some in Turkish and European libraries3 as well as a Turkish translation in manuscript4. A recent work5 mentions that this hagiography was much admired by the Helveti-Jarrahi order and served them as a model in composing their own hagiographies.
