Self-employed Contract Workers. The Social Situation of a Heterogeneous Workforce Self-employed contract workers receive increasing attention in the scientific and political debate. Within the discussion, special attention is drawn to social risks and dangers of abuse. Yet, not much has been researched on the extent, structure and social situation of this group. Recent data by the German Socio-Economic Panel show that contract workers are predominantly male, older, well qualified and are mainly employed in academic and craft professions. Though, their average hourly earnings are higher compared to employees in dependent employment contracts, they have to protect themselves self-responsibly against social risks. This is likely to be particularly difficult for low paid workers. Among self-employed contract workers without any employees, the share of low paid workers is particularly high and well above the value of employees in dependent employment contracts
