What is the connection between visual orders and social orders? This article goes some way to answering this question by analysing the use of video evidence to reconstruct two discourses from the field of sport. The article focuses on the roles played by the different social groups and how they use images. Whichever one has the power to decide what images are interpreted and how, also determines the way in which the actions of athletes are judged and how any potential rules infringements are sanctioned. Sports federations have a particular interest in influencing the way in which images are produced, processed and interpreted, and in adopting a position of authority. But whilst enforcing a single point of view yields a relatively clear consensus regarding the actions that take place during sporting events, this control comes at a price: the media-technical analysis replacing the live sporting experience
