This paper is concerned with the use of gross population density in behavioral analysis. The author presents a unitary system of notation for density decomposition and four models of density decomposition. Evidence from Chicago for 1930 1940 and 1960 and forty-seven cities in the 1960-68 period was used for empirical testing. Although the results vary by different models and data sources the most fundamental generalization that has emerged is that the contextual characteristics of living units explain most of the variation in gross density not the characteristics of the units themselves.
