Focusing on Swedish examples in particular, this paper argues that the archaeoacoustical phenomena known as ringing stones, despite opinions to the contrary, are possible to approach scientifically. A typology of sonorous stones (both geological and archaeological) is presented, and landscape and soundscape analyses in combination reveal patterns that suggests that prehistoric people of Sweden were well aware of the ringing stones and their sonorous properties and chose to relate to them in certain ways. The aim of this paper is to plant seeds of interest, to spread the knowledge of the existence of ringing stones, and to share the insights gained when studying them. Finally, suggestions for further research are presented
