This article reflects on the experience of incorporating photographic practice and historical analysis as integrated elements of a PhD research process. Focusing on a series of ethnographic histories of the Aran Islands, the research was concerned with two key questions: the role of photography in the assertion of ethnographic authority; and the potential of the photograph as a means of interrogating that same authority. Analysis of archive material formed the basis of the written thesis (Performing Ethnography: The Photograph as Measure of Difference on the Aran Islands), while a visual engagement with the findings led to the production of a body of photographic work (Intersections: Exploring Encounter on the Aran Islands). The article establishes an overview of the historical element of the project before working through the dynamics involved in the evolution of the visual practice and the presentation of the final works produced
