The article provides an overview of the latest historiographical developments made in the fields of Christian translation and the social history of interpreters. It proposes avenues grasp why and how these currents could dialogue with each other and give rise to future research. It also incorporates into the discussion some of the debates that have arisen in recent years regarding the concept of translation from an anthropological perspective. The text examines six main issues: the impact of Christian translation on the emergence of a terminology of justice in the indigenous languages; the conflicts over the ethics of translating-interpreting; the translators-interpreters’ communities of practices; their positioning in relation to the sociopolitical, cultural and linguistic setting of which they are a part; translating as a means to articulate jurisdictions; and translating as a methodological tool for the historical inquiry
