Mathurin Veyssière de La Croze, a Maurist from Saint-Germain-des-Prés, decided in 1696 to take refuge in Basle, where he converted to Calvinism, and then moved to Berlin. According to his account, he seems to have been influenced by Protestant controversial works in the years preceding his exile, but the reality seems more complicated than that. He was probably a Jansenist who decided to flee France in order to escape persecution there, and was only in Switzerland that he decided to change his religion. Once he had converted to Protestantism, he sought to compare the monotheist religions in his writings but his criticisms of the Catholic church nevertheless appear quite balanced
