The Cladocera, Copepoda and the Chaoboridae in River Oti in the Volta Basin area all showed circadian rhythmic behaviour; increasing in number in the drift, between sunset and sunrise. Each group showed more than one peak of drift during the night. The aerial spraying of Abate affected the Cladocera, Copepoda and the Chaoboridae at the dosing site upstream of the Simulium breeding sites, and caused catastrophic drifting of the organisms withone one hour after dosing. The catastrophic drifting did not cause a significant reduction in the zooplankton population within 24 hours after spraying because the majority of the Cladocera, Copepoda and Chaoboridae were at the bottom of the river during the day when the larvicide was applied
