Engagement of undergraduate STEM students
This study describes an intervention that introduced a period of solving non-routine problems into tertiary STEM lectures. The aim was twofold: to attempt to increase student engagement and to introduce them to the kind of domain-free abstract reasoning that involves critical, creative and innovative thinking. The study involved over 600 STEM participants in five lecture classes from three tertiary institutions. The results show that a style of l…
Atrocity stories and triumph stories
This paper investigates conflicting narratives available to lesbian and gay couples as a result of marriage and civil partnership. Whereas marginalisation may have made stories of exclusion particularly resonant for same-sex couples, marriage and civil partnership offer scope for new stories around inclusion and equality. Drawing on empirical research with married and civil partner same-sex couples in the UK, US and Canada, the paper contrasts co…

Congenital absence of the ulna with humeroradial synostosis in a prehistoric skeleton from Moundville, Alabama
An archaeologically-derived example of congenital absence of the ulna and humeroradial synostosis in a prehistoric North American adult female from Moundville, Alabama is presented. That a physically deformed individual could survive to adulthood attests to her ability to physically adjust to the handicap, as well as society's acceptance, support, or at the very least its indulgence, of persons with potentially crippling deformities. © 1998 John …
Collaboration in support of change
FTER 5 YEARS of collaborative involvement in a professional development school (PDS) project,' those of us who write this article have learned that collaboration is not what we thought it was. It involves much more than just talking and working together, and it is more complicated than simply bridging the differences that separate schools and universities. We now believe that collaboration is about altering relationships, not just among ourselves…

The effect of abate on the growth of Vibrio natriegens and Chlorella vulgaris
The effect of Abate on the growth of a species of bacteria, Vibrio natriegens, and a species of algae, Chlorella vulgaris, was studied. The growth of V. natriegens was measured by both the changes in the optical density and the viable counts of the bacterial suspension. Changes in the optical density of the alga measured by a colorimeter and by the direct counting the number of cells with a haemocytometer were taken as an index of growth. Abate w…
The effect of tidal heights on the distribution and abundance of coliform bacteria in the sediments of two sites in the Mersey Estuary
An investigation of the tidal factors controlling the abundance and distribution of coliform bacteria in the sediments of two intertidal sites in the River Mersey (U.K.) was made during 1976. Samples were collected, at approximately weekly intervals, from September to December. Counts of the total coliform, faecal coliform and E. coli type I, were made in order to relate the numbers of bacteria to the salinity conditions of the tidal waters cover…
Observations on the effect of the aerial spraying of abate, used in the control of simulium larvae, on the drift rates of microcrustacea and chaoboridae in the river Oti, Ghana
The Cladocera, Copepoda and the Chaoboridae in River Oti in the Volta Basin area all showed circadian rhythmic behaviour; increasing in number in the drift, between sunset and sunrise. Each group showed more than one peak of drift during the night. The aerial spraying of Abate affected the Cladocera, Copepoda and the Chaoboridae at the dosing site upstream of the Simulium breeding sites, and caused catastrophic drifting of the organisms withone o…
The effects of trampling on the soil Acari and Collembola of a Heathland
The effect of trampling on the Acari, (Soil mites) and the Collembola, (Springtails) in footpaths on Kinver Edge in Staffordshire is described. The distribution of the two groups of animals is clearly effected by pressure from trampling. Possible reasons for the uneven distribution of Acari and Collembola in footpaths are discussed
Changes in zooplankton populations in the White Volta with particular reference to the effect of Abate
The 24‐hour LC 50 of the nauplii of Thermocyclops hyalinus using Abate CE 200 solution was 0.23 ppm., while the 24‐hour LC 50 of both the copepodite and adult stages was 0.2 ppm. The numbers of drifting zooplanktonic Microcrustacea in the White Volta increased in numbers during the months of March, April, May, June and July in the dry season. The increase in numbers in the post‐sunset samples related to the vertical migration of the zoqplankton i…
An assessment of the ecological implications of new varieties of seeds
The history of the production and use of high yielding grain crops is outlined. The limitations of the nutritional value of both new and traditional varieties is given. The socio‐economic benefits derived from the new crops is outlined. The environmental costs of the wide spread use of new high yielding varieties of crops in terms of genetic diversity, pest problems in mono‐cultures and the need for greater human attention and increased energy in…
Fish deaths at Elton reservoir
The course of a proposed biological survey of Elton Reservoir was changed by the appearance of dead and decaying fish floating or washed onto the beaches. This was both unpleasant for sailors and disastrous to anglers. The case study illustrates the importance of maintaining a biological balance, as indicated by healthy fish stocks, whilst providing for industrial and amenity needs of those using the canals supplied by water from the reservoir. T…
Effect of an organophosphorus insecticide, abate, used in the control of Simulium damnosum on non‐target benthic fauna
The effect of Abate used in the control of Simulium damnosum on non‐target benthic invertebrate organisms was studied in river Oti (West Africa) in the Onchocerciasis Control Programme area. Abate was administered by aerial spraying and pre‐dosing and post‐dosing Surber samples were compared. Baetidae and Leptophlebiidae, two of the three predominating organisms were seriously affected by the Abate. Other non‐target organisms that were killed wer…

The role of technology in agriculture (A Short Ecological Appraisal)
Techniques such as irrigation, the use of agrochemicals and new seed varieties have been used increasingly in agriculture over the past 25 years. The use of such techniques has caused disturbances to the agroecosystems which have become established over many years of more traditional agriculture. These disturbances have occurred in both developed and developing countries and have caused alarm and concern in many parts of the World. It is suggeste…
The use of site surveys in the collection of recreation data, with particular reference to the Congleton district of Cheshire
The provision of countryside recreation facilities at a local level is likely to receive increasing attention during the next decade. As an integral part of the assessment of the quality of present provision within the Congleton District of Cheshire (U.K.) five site surveys were made. Each site provides different facilities for recreation and interview questions were designed to investigate the background of the visitors and the nature of the int…

A survey on the impact of motorways on agriculture
This paper looks into the ways in which farmers and farms are affected by motorways running through or near to their land. The investigation was based on an extensive questionnaire covering many aspects of farming. The more important of these questions are described and discussed in the text. Two farming communities were investigated; one near a newly opened motorway, the other, near a motorway which had been open several years. The two groups ar…
Environmental resources at Salford (a report)
In 1968 a postgraduate degree course leading to a Master of Science in Environmental Resources was initiated by the Department of Biology at the University of Salford, U.K. At first there were between ten and twelve students per year on the Course; there are now more than forty. The Course has a multi‐national, multi‐disciplinary intake and although based on the Department of Biology of a University it draws staff and lecturers from other departm…
