FTER 5 YEARS of collaborative involvement in a professional development school (PDS) project,' those of us who write this article have learned that collaboration is not what we thought it was. It involves much more than just talking and working together, and it is more complicated than simply bridging the differences that separate schools and universities. We now believe that collaboration is about altering relationships, not just among ourselves but with everyone with whom we come into contact. Collaboration, in short, is a powerful means of significant and lasting personal growth that may, through our other relationships, lead to substantial organizational change. In this article we write from the perspectives of five people who have taken on new roles and responsibilities. Four of us-Mike, Francee, Kathy and Mary-write as clinical educators, teachers who are released from normal duties for some percentage of time to do PDS work. One of us, Marilyn, writes from the perspective of a collaborating college faculty member. By assuming these new and ambiguous roles without abandoning our prior institutional roles, we have come to see ourselves and our work
